Proper storage and handling are essential to maintaining the integrity and potency of research peptides over time. Even high-purity peptides can degrade rapidly if not stored under appropriate conditions.

Lyophilized (Powder) Storage

Most research peptides are supplied in lyophilized (freeze-dried) form. In this state, they are relatively stable and can be stored for extended periods when handled correctly.

• Store at -20°C or colder for long-term storage (months to years)
• Refrigeration (2-8°C) is acceptable for short-term storage (weeks)
• Keep vials sealed and away from moisture — lyophilized peptides are hygroscopic
• Protect from light exposure, particularly UV light
• Allow vials to reach room temperature before opening to prevent condensation

Reconstituted Peptide Storage

Once reconstituted (dissolved in solution), peptides become significantly less stable. Proper handling at this stage is critical:

• Use bacteriostatic water (BAC water) for reconstitution to prevent microbial growth
• Store reconstituted peptides at 2-8°C (standard refrigerator temperature)
• Use within 30 days of reconstitution for optimal potency
• Avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles, which accelerate degradation
• Use sterile technique when withdrawing from vials to prevent contamination

Reconstitution Best Practices

The reconstitution process itself can impact peptide quality if done incorrectly. Follow these guidelines for best results:

Direct the solvent stream down the inside wall of the vial rather than directly onto the lyophilized cake. Allow the peptide to dissolve naturally — do not shake or vortex aggressively, as this can cause denaturation. Gentle swirling is acceptable if needed.

Signs of Degradation

Researchers should be aware of common indicators that a peptide may have degraded:

• Cloudiness or particulate matter in reconstituted solutions
• Unusual color changes in the solution
• Reduced or inconsistent research results compared to fresh preparations
• Changes in the appearance of the lyophilized powder (clumping, color change)
